Crossing Accident Trends

  • Crossing accidents refer to incidents involving contact between vehicles such as automobile or farming cultivator and train at railway crossings. Most crossing accidents result from violation of traffic regulation such as failure to stop and go or insistence on going straight in disregard of train alarm or crossing barrier at railway crossings. In terms of trends from 2001 to 2008, crossing accidents have decreased 12.3% on annual average from 60 in 2001 to 24 in 2008.
  • Steady decline in crossing accidents from 2001 is believed to be attributable to consistent investment in safety upgrades such as separation of crossing elevation or installation of alarm devices as well as proactive public awareness promotion.
