Railway Accident Trends

  • Railway accidents refer to incidents involving injury/death or property damage in relation to railway operation or railway facility management.

    Railway accident trends from 2001 to 2008 show that 710 accidents broke out in 2001 in total, killing 256 persons and injuring 432 person. The figure declined to 408 persons in 2008, killing 159 persons and injuring 251 persons, resulting in 7.6% decline in annual average accidents, 6.6% decline in deaths and 7.5% decline in injuries.

    In the meantime, serious railway accidents involving 5 or more deaths or injuries, collision or derailment of passenger train numbered 24 in the same period, killing 194 persons and injuring 369 persons.

  • Most serious railway accidents involve incidents in trains or at crossings. The most recent devastating incident happened on August 8, 2003 when Mugunghwa train collided with a freight trainset in Gomo-Kyungsan Station section, killing 2 persons and injuring 57 persons.
